GST Invoice for Freelancers India: Complete 2026 Guide
As a freelancer in India, GST invoicing rules apply to you — but the specifics depend on your annual turnover and the type of services you provide. This guide answers the most common questions freelancers have about GST invoices.
Do Freelancers Need to Register for GST?
GST registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds:
- ₹20 lakh — for most states providing services
- ₹10 lakh — for special category states (North-East, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K)
- ₹40 lakh — for businesses dealing only in goods (not typically applicable to freelancers)
If you earn from exports or provide services to overseas clients, you may also need to register regardless of turnover (as it qualifies as inter-state supply).
Can Freelancers Issue Invoices Without GST?
Yes. If your turnover is below the threshold, you are not required to register for GST and should issue a simple "Bill of Supply" or "Invoice" without any GST. You cannot charge GST unless you are registered.
What GST Rate Applies to Freelance Services?
Most freelance services — web development, graphic design, content writing, photography, consulting, digital marketing — fall under 18% GST (SAC code 998314 for IT services, 998361 for design, 998363 for photography, etc.).
What to Include in a Freelancer GST Invoice
- Your full name / business name and address
- Your GSTIN (if registered)
- Invoice number and date
- Due date
- Client's name, address, and GSTIN (if registered)
- Description of service and SAC code
- Taxable amount
- GST rate and amount (CGST+SGST for same state; IGST for different state or overseas)
- Total invoice amount
- Payment details (bank account or UPI ID)
Freelancer Invoice Example
Rahul, a freelance web developer in Pune (Maharashtra), completes a project for a startup in Mumbai (also Maharashtra). The agreed fee is ₹50,000.
- Taxable amount: ₹50,000
- CGST @ 9%: ₹4,500
- SGST @ 9%: ₹4,500
- Total Invoice: ₹59,000
If the client was in Delhi (different state), Rahul would charge IGST @ 18% = ₹9,000, same total of ₹59,000.
